How to Refine SharePoint Search Using Enterprise Keywords?

N.B. – In this article, we have created a basic web part, which contains a Content Search web part that turn up a particular content type. In order to modify a site collection’s default search page, an enterprise search center can be created.  With the enterprise version of SharePoint 2013 this site template is available. The steps and processes to update refinement panel are alike to the following article. The new Enterprise Search Center site can be turn as default search page for the specific site collection.

  • Turn on Enterprise Keyword column

To activate the Enterprise Keyword Feature for a list or a document library, go in to list/library settings panel, hit the keyword/Enterprise Meta Data setting option under the Permissions and Management. Check the box next to the Enterprise Keyword column if unchecked and don’t forget to enable keyword synchronization. Once done with all these process, click ok. Search crawl require running and indexing the contents and element to make it available after the keywords have been placed.

  • Create Managed Property Mapping

SharePoint do have facilities for refinable strings, decimals, dates etc. Being parts of the site’s search schema,, they do help in making things easier. Site columns or crawled properties can be diagrammed to managed properties, which will further help in customizing the search experience.

To set these, navigate to Site Settings and hit on Search Schema from Site Collection Administration. In the filter box, type the name of the next available managed property. You can use refinable string for the text fields related crawled properties. SharePoint facilitates 100 of these and they are limited. In the following illustration, refinablestring00 and refinablestring01 have already been in use. Refinablestring02 being the next available can be put in to the filter box.

Drift over the managed property column and hit on Edit/Map property. On the setting page of managed property, scroll down till the mapping and all the way to the crawled properties section and then click on Add a Mapping.

To locate the crawled property that requires mapping, you can use the search box. In the following illustration, we are looking for keywords/ crawled property as this symbolizes the Enterprise Keywords that have been previously used on the site. Hit OK.

Scroll to the Alias section and give the managed property a descriptive name so it can be easily identified. Click OK at the bottom of the managed property settings page.

  • Add Refinement web part to page

With the above steps, a page has been created that runs a Content Search Web part, rolling up several documents for a particular content type. Those documents are tagged with Enterprise Keywords.

In order to add and configure the refinement panel, you should put the page in to edit mode. You can make use of the Insert tab ribbon to choose the web part. Refinement Panel/Refinement web part can found under search. Look for the add button and click it.

This will make Refinement panel to connect to the Content Search web part. Here you can edit the Refinement web part and then you have to choose Refiners, this button can be found in the web part properties window.

The default refiners in the Refinement panel can be removed easily by using the remove button. Refinablestring02 managed property requires to be added to selected refiners, which will allow users to refine the Content Search web part using Enterprise Keywords. Just go through the accessible refiner list and click on the Add button to shift refinablestring02.

Once done, the Refinement Panel/ The Refinement Configuration Page will have preview option, where you can see the changes you have made, it will show you the selected refiner as well as its related contents. You can customize the display name for the display template and sorting for the refiner. Once done, click ok on the web part property box and on the Refinement configuration page. Saver all the setting as required.

Do remember that the page has an operating refinement panel. You can now easily refine the content being returned in the Content Search web part by equivalent Enterprise Keywords.
